How to Play Scattergories: Complete Rules & Guide

Scattergories is the classic fast-paced category party game where quick thinking and creativity pay off. Players roll a random letter, race against a countdown timer, and write down an answer for each category starting with that exact letter. The twist? If anyone else has the same answer as you, neither of you scores a point!

Step-by-Step Gameplay

1. Get Paper & Pens: Give every player or team a pen and a sheet of paper with numbers matching the category list.
2. Roll the Letter: Tap the Roll Letter button to select a random letter for the round (letters like Q, X, and Z are excluded for fairness).
3. Start the Timer: Start the 3-minute (180s) timer. All players simultaneously write down one answer per category starting with the active letter.
4. Pencils Down: When the buzzer rings or time expires, everyone immediately puts down their pens.
5. Score the Round: Go down the list category by category. Each player reads their answer aloud.

Official Scoring & Answering Rules

• Unique Answers (1 Point): You score 1 point for a valid answer that nobody else in the game wrote down.
• Duplicate Answers (0 Points): If two or more players write down the identical answer (or obvious variants), that answer is crossed off and no one scores for it.
• Articles Don't Count: Articles like "The", "A", and "An" do not count toward the letter requirement. For example, The Great Gatsby counts as G, not T.
• Alliteration Bonus (Optional House Rule): In official tournament rules, giving an answer with repeated starting letters earns bonus points! For example, "Ronald Reagan" for the letter R scores 2 points instead of 1.
• Disputed Answers: If an answer is questionable (e.g. adding a generic adjective like "Big dog" for B), players vote. A majority vote determines whether the answer is accepted.

Winning Tips for Game Night

To win Scattergories, avoid the most obvious answers that first pop into everyone's head. Think of obscure pop-culture references, historical figures, foreign cities, or creative synonyms. If you get stuck on a tricky category, skip it and circle back before the timer runs out!
